Retired hospital porter Robert Kime bought a timeshare in Cyprus over 20 years ago from Lion Resorts. “It was a lovely hotel in Akrotiri,” the 72 year old recalls. “We spent around £10,000 initially, which was a lot of money back then. But it seemed worth it because we loved the place and especially the hotel.”
The timeshare company leapt on Robert and his partner on their first holiday as members, persuading them to upgrade to a second week. However not long afterwards Lion Resorts dropped the hotel in question from their portfolio.
“We were very disappointed,” Robert admits. “And it only degenerated from there. Onagrup took over Lion Resorts and our accommodation choices got worse and worse. Soon we couldn´t go to Cyprus at all but were only given choices in Mallorca, which we weren’t keen on.”
“Over the 20 years we owned the timeshare we must have spent over £50,000 including the ever increasing annual fees. And we only had a few actual holidays with them,” says Robert. “We needed a way out.”
Hearing a radio advert for European Consumer Claims, Robert and his partner called to book a consultation. “We were a bit apprehensive at first,” admits the Lincolnshire native. “It was a few thousand pounds that we would have to pay for ECC’s service. But in the end we thought ‘in for a penny, in for a pound’ and signed up. I’m very glad we did.”
“it took a long time, but the first bit of good news was that we were free from the timeshare contract and the obligation to keep paying maintenance fees. Honestly we would probably have been satisfied with just that result, for the amount of money it was going to save us.”
“Then we got a call from a timeshare lawyer called Adriana Stoyanova who told us that she was working to secure financial compensation for us. We would need to be patient, but she was confident.”
“18 months it took, but one day out of the blue we got the amazing phone call from ECC to tell us that we had been awarded €57,000. What a lovely phone call to get!”
Robert and his partner have received their cash and wasted no time in booking two dream holidays. “We are going to Australia first,” smiles Robert. “Then next year we will visit America. We can’t wait!”
What advice does Robert have for anyone considering retaining ECC to make a compensation claim against their timeshare company? “Firstly, be patient. There is no hurrying the law, but ECC do a great job and they will stick with it for as long as it takes.
“They certainly did for us.”
